Passion Projects

March Welcome – Live Well, Travel Well, and Breathe Hatteras Island

There’s no end to learning.

Wellness isn’t all fitness and healthy eating. We also need to feed our minds and exercise our gray matter. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change and form neural connections, helping the brain function and adapt. Finding creative outlets, learning new skills, reading (not doomscrolling), get crafty, doing sudoku or crossword puzzles, and listening to music, are all activities that can help us stay mentally active and connected.

So what is a passion project? A passion project is more than just a hobby or pursuit outside of your work or other personal responsibilities. It can be an extension of what interests you, sparks creativity, or challenges you to pursue an idea, allowing it to evolve and become something tangible or give purpose. Investing time and energy, the trick is to not let it consume you. Older-adult college enrollment is a growing trend that supports this need for personal fulfillment and lifelong learning.

My passion project has been two years in the making. It started as an idea that I wanted to write a travel blog about all the places I’ve been (over thirty countries and counting), as well as explore my home on Hatteras Island. But when it came to it, I was stuck. I realized there were other things in my hierarchy of needs I had to work through first. Like having the right mindset, starting this wellness group, and getting to the bottom of my why. I kept a messy journal, scribbling down my thoughts, with a mix of shopping and to-do lists, bits of ephemera (yep look that up), and doodles to fill up the blanks. But I never lost sight of what I wanted to do and achieve in the end. It just took a little longer.

As we know, everything in life is a journey, and it’s never a straight path. Just keep going. You’ll get to where you need to be at the right time. So here I am moving on to the next stage of my journey and finally seeing my travel and wellness blog come to light. Feel free to follow me.
